Long-Term Outcomes of Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty: Effect of Surgical Indication and Disease Severity

The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes and graft survival in a large patient cohort up to 10 years after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) based on surgical indication and Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) severity.

Methods:

The cohort in this retrospective study included 750 eyes that underwent DMEK for FECD (86%), bullous keratopathy (BK, 9%), and other indications (5%). Based on the modified Krachmer grading, 186 eyes (29%) had moderate FECD (Krachmer grade 3–4) and 440 eyes (68%) had advanced FECD (Krachmer grade 5–6). Main outcome measures were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central corneal thickness, endothelial cell density (ECD), endothelial cell loss (ECL), postoperative complication rate, and graft survival.

Results:

Risk of Intraocular Lens Opacification After Endothelial Keratoplasty for Different Intraocular Lens Models: A Retrospective Single-Center Cohort Study

The aims of this study were to calculate the specific risk of opacification for different intraocular lens (IOL) models and to determine whether differences exist, even between lenses made of similar acrylic materials.

Meniscus-Shaped Stromal Lenticule Addition Keratoplasty for Corneal Regularization and Thickening in Advanced Keratoconus

The aim of this study was to investigate the outcome of the meniscus-shaped stromal lenticule addition keratoplasty (MS-SLAK) in corneal regularization and thickness.

Methods:

Patients waiting for deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty for advanced keratoconus with an intolerance to contact lenses (CLs) underwent the MS-SLAK procedure by FSL 80 kHz ablation (VICTUS, Technolas Perfect Vision, DE). Customized positive meniscus-shaped stromal lenticules were obtained and implanted. Examination was performed at baseline and at 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up and included corrected distance visual acuity both with spectacles and CLs (spectacle CDVA and CL-CDVA), manifest refraction spherical equivalent, slit-lamp examination, anterior segment optical coherence tomography, corneal topography, and in vivo confocal microscopy.
